Story of Statuemap
Our journey started in 2006, when Szoborlap.hu was founded. It started as a personal site for collecting (mostly black/white) pictures of statues and poems and placing them on a map. Two years later it turned into a community site, with stricter rules on how to introduce a statue.
The collective work transformed the site into a Wikipedia-like database, accuracy of data becoming a very important factor. In the end of 2010 the site hosted close to 12,000 artpages and 70,000 photos.
2007 was the year when I started to develop the international version of Szoborlap.hu, this being the first version of Statuemap. It grew slowly, and after a while it turned out that it was impossible to make it a Szoborlap-like site. After 2 years I shut it down and started to work on a new concept.
This fresh thinking comes from the experience with Szoborlap and from the need for a simple and user-friendly website. Szoborlap's English uploads are for the time being the default database of the site but after a while I do hope that users from around the world - like You - will find here the joy and passion for a new hobby: collecting public art!
I hope you'll find the site easy to use. If you have an idea or come across a bug please use the "Feedback" button on the left side. If you have a question, just drop me an email by using the Contact form.
Enjoy!
